Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

There has been a great outpouring of grief across the world for this great man, Steve Jobs. Dats Cool has been reading the many quotes, watching the many inspirational speeches by Jobs and viewing the many ways in which people have expressed their grief.

Of those, the above tribute stands out in our memories. This street art in New York City shows an image of Jobs in his younger years when viewed from one side, and an image of him that many will remember for years to come. RIP Steve.

The Sketchbook Project

Have you ever doodled on a notepad and felt that it was good enough to share with the world? You wished there was a way to show someone just how great your little picture is? Well, this is your chance to share your little sketches.

The Sketchbook project is finally ready for a world tour in 2012! Having previously only toured around the US, in 2012, the project is extending their tour to London, UK and Melbourne, Australia. To participate, all you need to do is purchase one of the custom designed sketchbooks then draw, doodle, sketch, scribble to your heart’s content. Simply post your sketchbook back where it will go on tour before resting at the Brooklyn Art Library where it will be catalogued and available to be viewed.

It’s $25 to purchase a sketchbook and participate so get your pens and pencils ready!

Knife & Saw Bike Shelf

The recent Tour De France has certainly inspired us here at Datscool to think about going cycling. And even purchasing a brand new shiny bicycle. But what happens when you live in a tiny apartment and there is no where to store the new bike without it being stolen or tripped over?

Here is a great solution from Knife and Saw – a groovy solid wood shelf! Not only does it hold your bike, but there’s also room to put what you like on the shelf – be it books or flowers.

It has been designed to fit most bikes with the standard slot size of 1.75? and the clearance needed underneath the topbar at 17? apart is 1.5?. The shelf is suspended by a steel square rod mount and attaches to the wall by sliding and screwing into two wall studs. It comes in two colours: walnut and ash.

Price: USD$270 – $300 + shipping

First ever animated tattoo

There is always something a little cool about tattoos…but now they are more mainstream and accepted by society – is there a way to still stand out and be a little different?

Well, here’s one way! An animated tattoo! How, I hear you ask? A tattoo artist from Paris named Karl Marc, has basically included a QR code into the design. This means that by using a code reader on your iPhone the tattoo comes to life – an animated show. The code has been cleverly incorporated into the design so it still looks a work of art, whilst not ‘animated’.

Very cool….but no recommendations on where to get one as yet!
